South Devon Carers' Consortium

"Identifies, values, supports and promotes carers"

South Devon Carers' Consortium is a body of people, some of whom represent a charitable group or organisation, with an interest in carers' issues.

Any individual, group or charitable organisation that is concerned with the needs of carers can become a member. People who are currently carers are especially welcome (see below for a list of member organisations)

The Consortium's aims

Provide information to carers and to service planners, purchasers and providers

Raise public awareness of carers and carers' issues

Promote the value of carers, and enable their active involvement in making decisions to ensure carer-led provision

Promote good standards and equity of care provision across the Primary Care Trust areas of South Hams & West Devon, Teignbridge and Torbay

Promote the sharing of good practice between agencies and member organisations in their work with carers

Consortium activities

The Consortium employs a Co-ordinator, Justin Haden, to co-ordinate its activities, raise carer awareness, make improvements to the information network, and involve carers in planning and monitoring services.

The sort of work the Consortium is involved with include the Torbay Carers' Register, the Teignbridge Carers' Action Group, and the South Hams & West Devon Carers Link.

The Consortium holds regular liaison meetings, both local and cross-district, to which members are invited to share information, find support and contribute to steering the work of the Consortium.

Benefits of membership

Members receive many direct and indirect advantages including:

- a free quarterly newsletter giving information about recent developments and items of interest to carers and professionals, both locally and nationally,

- helping spread the word about your group's activities by letting us know what you are doing to help carers,

- a source of advice and information on carers' issues or help with the planning of services from staff,

- the opportunity to find out what other agencies are doing, and learn directly from their experience,

- helping to shape carers' services in the future.
