There are nearly 7 million adult carers in the UK (14% of the population). There are about 35,000 carers in South Devon: - nearly 9,000 in the South Hams, - over 12,000 in Teignbridge, - nearly 14,000 in Torbay. There are an estimated 50,000 young carers in the UK (250 in South Devon). 1 in 5 household on average has a carer. 1 million care for over 35 hours a week. Three-quarters of a million care for over 50 hours a week 96% of all care in the NHS is provided by the Primary Health Care Team. Each GP has on average 270 carers on their list. Only one third of carers receive regular visits from statutory or voluntary services. 65% of carers suffer from illness or injury. Over 1.5 million carers look after someone living with them. Two-thirds feel that caring puts a great strain on their marriage. Over 50% face financial hardship. Over 50% have been caring for more than 5 years. 25% have been caring for more than 10 years. One third have never had a break. The peak age for caring is 45 - 64 years old (1 in 5 of this age range are carers). 40% of carers are male. 40% of carers are spouses. 29% are children caring for parents. 19% are parents caring for a child. If 1 in 10 were to stop caring, it would cost the country £2 billion to replace the care given. Carers save the state £34 billion by undertaking care at home.
